Onam celebration was special this year for the children of Make A Difference (MAD). A visit to the Pattom Palace, lunch and a hearty tete-a-tete with the head of the Travancore royal family who also gifted them new clothes (‘onakkodi’); August 25 was indeed a memorable day for the children tutored by the youth volunteers of the charity organisation MAD.
“Parthas Textiles agreed to sponsor clothes for the 43 children from Hindu Mahila Mandiram, Poojappura,” says Munna Aarish, who handles the public relations of MAD’s Thiruvananthapuram chapter.
Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma wished the kids ‘Happy Onam’ and talked about the legend of Mahabali, clarifying that the tale has been misinterpreted over the ages. He said that Mahabali was a well built and handsome king and not like the potbellied ‘Maveli’ portrayed these days. Later, he called the kids one by one and gave them their ‘onakkodi’.
The children rendered an Onam song for him. He also told that back in his days they cheered with calls of ‘aarrpooo irrroo’ during the festivities. The Uthradom Thirunal also had a surprise in store for the children. He gave them a picture of a handsome and well built King.
“This is how the real Mahabali looked like. Show this to everyone you meet and tell them about this majestic King who ruled Kerala,” he said.
Before leaving, he told the kids that good education would make one a “king in life”.
