Lucknow: Abu Salem attended his mother's funeral at Azamgarh on Friday amid tight security arrangements.
The underworld don, who is currently in jail waiting trial in a number of crime cases, was brought to Azamgarh from Mumbai on Friday morning by a police team and then taken to his native village Pathan Tola under Sarai Meer police station for the funeral.
A court in Mumbai had granted Salem permission to attend the funeral of his mother, Jannatunisha, who died in Pathan Tola on Tuesday.
Salem offered 'namaz-e-janaza' at Baitul Uloom madarsa along with some of his family members before the body was laid to rest. The don has been kept in Azamgarh Jail for the night and he would shifted to Mumbai on Saturday morning.
"I have not come to do politics, but to attend the funeral of my mother," Salem said in response to a question from waiting journalists. Police had to use mild force to control the crowd which had converged to have a look at the don who acknowledged their presence by raising his hands.
Salem also came on the terrace of his house to greet the crowd on roof tops, trees and mosques. Two platoons of PAC and a large number of police personnel was deployed for his security.
