CHENNAI: Enthusiastic residents and auto drivers living in and around Mackay's Gardens near Thousand Lights participated in a blood donation and eye screening camp, conducted as part of an accident awareness campaign on Sunday. The camp was organised by the Lions Club of Madras along with Accident Death Care Cell and Annai Terasa Auto Riksha Ottunar Sangam. It was not just an informative camp for the gathering about accidents, but they were equally motivated to continue their service of lending a helping hand to save the lives of accident victims. PT Ali, managing trustee of the Accident Death Care Cell, said that the cell had so far attended to more than 3,000 accident cases. “We have also sent many bodies of those who died in road accidents to their homes that were far away,” said Ali. Appreciating auto drivers for their assistance in taking accident victims to hospitals on time without expecting a reward in return, Ali advised them to follow traffic rules to avoid accidents and also to spread the word to others. P Shakthivel, DIG Vellore Range, in his light-hearted speech, drove home the point that those who do service people in good faith need not be scared. He also pointed out that the two main reasons for accidents were drunken driving and rash driving. “Persons injured in road accidents are not cared for or taken to hospital on time. I have seen in many cases that auto drivers go in groups and take special care of the victims without fear. A person helping an accident victim will not be harassed by police. Nowadays, we do not even take their signatures. We just take their statements,” he said.
