Bengaluru: In an ‘issueless’ Karnataka Assemby polls, it is one ‘non-issue’ a day that is setting the tone for the voting day. The latest one is Bahmani Utsav. The main opposition BJP which has vehemently opposed the Tipu Jayanti, calling it an insult to the Hindus, is already up in the arms against Bahmani Utsava.
After briefly talking about the Congress government’s corruption, the saffron party is back to “Hindutva” in this election.
The first one to attack the move was BJP MP and its CM face B S Yeddyurappa confidante Shobha Karandlaje. In a tweet she called the Bahmani kings murderers and rapists of the Hindus in north Karnataka.

After the BJP has made it a big issue, the ruling Congress clarified that Bahmani Utsav has nothing to do with the government and it was a private initiative. The chief minister Siddaramaiah has distanced himself from the whole controversy. Speaking to media he angrily said “I have no idea. You better ask the concerned minister”.
The Medical education minister Dr. Sharanprakash Patil who allegedly proposed the idea of organizing Bahmani Utsav on the lines of Hampi Utsav, Kandambostava and Rashtrakoot Utsav is now claiming that it is a private event and the government has nothing to do with it.
Speaking to News18 he said, “The Bahmani Utsav will happen on March 6th at Gulbarga and the government is not sponsoring it.”
The revenue minister Kagodu Thimmappa has also rubbished BJP’s claims that it is being sponsored by the government. Speaking to News18, the 86-year-old minister said, “Who is Bahmani Sultan? Why should we celebrate them? The BJP is jobless and peddling lies.”
Despite BJP’s opposition the organizers have decided to go ahead with the celebrations.
The Bahmani Kingdom was the first independent Muslim empire in the south and it was founded in 1347 AD. A Turk general Alauddin Hassan Bahman Shah revolted against the Qutub dynasty in Delhi and founded his own kingdom in Gulbarga in today’s Karnataka. Later the capital was moved to Bidar. At its zenith the Bahmanis ruled entire north Karnataka above the river Thungabhadra, most parts of today’s Telangana and Marathwada regions.
They were at war with the neighbouring Vijayanagara Empire and the emperor Sri Krishnadevarayathe great defeated them in 1519. After that the Bahmani kingdom broke into five smaller states –Adilshahi of Bijapura, Nizamshahi of Ahmednagar, QutbShahi of Golconda, Baridshahi of Bidar and Imadshahi of Birar. Together they were called Deccan Sultanates. In 1565 the five sultanates came together to take on the mighty Vijayanagara empire and defeated the last emperor Ramaraya at the battle of Talikote in 1565 AD.
According to historians the victorious armies of the Sultanates set the capital of Vijayanagaraor Hampi on fire and it was burnt for six months.
The Bahmnani kings have built magnificent buildings and were the patrons of art and culture. They had many Hindus in prominent posts in their kingdom reveal documents of those days.
