KOCHI: With the aim of raising productivity the Ernakulam district panchayat is all set to distribute machines to farmers.“We have asked the gram panchayat heads to conduct a survey and assess the requirement of each farmer and give a request. The district panchayat will provide 60 per cent fund and the gram panchayat has to meet the remaining 40 per cent,” said district panchayat president Eldose Kunnappilly.Tillers, tractors, coconut climbing machines will be distributed for which `50 lakh has been earmarked. The number of machines can be increased if the gram panchayats are willing to contribute more, he said. Incidentally this year, the district panchayat did not earmark any agricultural project as the focus was on construction and irrigation. Some funds were not used as a minor irrigation project has not been implemented. This fund is being utilised for agriculture as it would lapse before March.“Depending on the requirements of the district panchayat, the funds will be given to the gram panchayats so that they can purchase the machines,” said Principal Agricultural Officer, Asha Devi Varma.
