Junior doctors in the state were thrashed and beaten up by the police after an altercation with SP MLA Irfan Solanki on Friday.

Lucknow: As the ruling Samajwadi Party government grapples with the doctors strike across the state, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav gave an assurance to the striking doctors that all charges against the 24 doctors, who have been lodged in a jail in Kanpur, will be dropped.

However, there has been no assurance from the CM on whether action will be taken against his his MLA.

Almost a dozen medical colleges with more than 2000 doctors have gone on strike in the state. More than 200 doctors at the Agra Medical College resigned on Tuesday demanding justice for the junior doctors who were thrashed and beaten up by the police after an altercation with SP MLA Irfan Solanki on Friday.

Meanwhile, amidst huge criticism for the government by opposition parties, SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav also hauled up son Akhilesh's government over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.

"The UP government is being run by stooges," he said at a public meeting where Akhilesh was present. The chiding came just hours after several protesting BJP workers were lathicharged by the police after they marched in support of the doctors.

"Why doesn't the Akhilesh government take these small things seriously?" BJP's Vijay Bahadur Pathak asked. "This matter could have been controlled if the administration took the right action from the very beginning," he said.

The strike, which began in Kanpur, entered its fourth day on Tuesday. Many hospitals in Delhi have also joined in the protest.
