All eyes on 'Adaminte Makan Abu' again
'Adaminte Makan Abu' is India's official entry for the Oscar Awards in the foreign language film category.

With 'Adaminte Makan Abu' being selected as the official Indian nomination for the Oscar Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category, Mollywood is eager to see whether it will find a place in the final list of five world movies that will be screened at the Oscars.

According to the proceedings, after each country submits its official entry, the films will be screened by the Foreign Language Film Award Committee, whose members will select five official nominations by a secret ballot.

So far, three Indian films were nominated for the prestigious Academy Award for the Best Foreign Language Film. Mehboob Khan's 'Mother India' was the first Indian film to win a nomination in 1958. After 'Mother India,' the second Indian film to get a similar honour was Mira Nair's 'Salaam Bombay' (1988). The last Indian film to be nominated for the award was Ashutosh Gowarikar's Aamir Khan-starrer 'Lagaan-Once Upon a Time in India' (2001). Interestingly, 'Adaminte Makan Abu' is only the second Malayalam movie to be selected as the official Indian entry for the prestigious award, Rajeev Anchal's Mohanlal-starrer 'Guru', in 1997, being the first one.

Among the popular movies selected as the Indian entry that failed to reach the top five include 'Taare Zameen Par', 'Rang De Basanti', 'Paheli', 'Devdas', 'Hey Ram,' 'Ekalavya,' '1947: Earth,' 'Indian (Hindusthani)' and 'Jeans.'

The other popular Bollywood entries that failed to reach the elite list include Guru Dutt's 'Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam,' the Sunil Dutt-Waheeda Rehman-Amitabh Bachchan team's 'Reshma aur Shera,' Nana Patekar and Jackie Shroff's 'Parinda,' Rishi Kapoor's 'Henna' and Dimple Kapadia's 'Rudaali.'

Satyajit Ray's movie 'The Chess Players' and Mani Ratnam's 'Anjali' had also failed to make it to the final five nominations.

Though it missed out on the top list, Sandeep Sawant's 'Shwaas' had the best placing, at sixth in 2004, among the lot that missed the top list. However, with its tantalising premise, universal theme and simplistic and realistic way of narration, film critics hope that 'Abu' will make it to the final five.
