Ambubachi 2024: Dos And Don'ts As Per Astrology During This Period
The main entrance to Assam's Kamakhya Temple is currently closed to devotees. The temple remains closed for three days during Ambubachi.

Ambubachi is a major annual Hindu festival tied to numerous scriptural legends. Also called Amavati in various regions, it celebrates the yearly menstrual cycle of Goddess Kamakhya. According to belief, Devi Kamakhya, the presiding deity of Assam’s Kamakhya temple and a manifestation of Mother Shakti, undergoes her annual menstruation during this period. Additionally, it is believed that during the monsoon rains, the creative and nurturing energy represented by Mother Earth’s menstruation becomes accessible to devotees at this site during the festival.

This year, Ambubachi started on June 22 and will end on June 25. The main entrance to the Kamakhya Temple is currently closed to devotees. The temple remains closed for three days during Ambubachi, as it is believed that Goddess Kamakhya rests for three days like traditional menstrual seclusion observed by women. Special pujas are held during this period.

According to astrology, the new moon is observed just after the sun transitions into the sign of Gemini. There are specific guidelines to follow during this period for optimal results, as well as certain prohibitions. Scriptures outline various actions that should be avoided during this time.

During this time, one’s Gurudev can be worshipped. Those with a female guru, or Guruma, can also perform worship. It is recommended to cover the idol of the goddess with a red cloth during this period. No auspicious activities such as weddings, pujas, household chores etc. should be performed during the three days of Ambubachi. Tree planting and mining are also prohibited during Ambubachi.

During Ambubachi, refrain from worshipping with mantras. Instead, simply light incense and remember your deity. Avoid cultivating crops, buying or selling houses or land, and injuring snakes during this time. It is also advised to avoid travelling unless it is necessary. During Ambubachi, feeding Brahmins is believed to help fulfil your wishes. Additionally, you can donate fruits to three poor individuals as part of the observance.
