KOTTARAKKARA: Around 50 students were injured when a school van they were travelling in turned turtle near the railway over-bridge at Ambalathumkala near here on Thursday.The van of Sree Narayana Guru Central School, Ezhukone, slipped off the road into a rubber plantation 20 feet down, after the driver lost control of the vehicle while attempting to give way for a speeding vehicle from the opposite direction.The local people and the police rushed the injured to the Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital. Several students suffered fractures. Later, parents shifted most of the children to various private hospitals in Kottarakkara and Kollam.A primary school student who suffered serious fractures underwent an immediate operation at the Taluk Hospital. The cleaner of the van too suffered minor fractures, but the driver escaped unhurt.According to witnesses, a major tragedy was averted as the van, which turned turtlegot stuck between rubber trees. The van was on its way to the school after picking up students from the Kottarakkara area, when the accident occurred around 8.30 am.Hospital authorities said that the students were in a state of shock when they reached the hospital and majority left the hospital by afternoon.
