SALEM : Former DMK minister Veerapandi S Arumugam faced another setback on Friday as the judicial magistrate dismissed his second bail plea and extended his remand by 15 days.Arumugam was arrested on June 30 following a land grab complaint by Bala Mohan Raj of Dasanaickenpatti and was remanded for 15 days. His counsel Narayanan’s bail plea before the fourth JM court was dismissed on August 8. DMK lawyers, who were planning to appeal to a higher court, however, filed a bail plea before the same court. Meanwhile, advocate M A Shajahan also moved a bail petition and wanted the hearing on August 16, but the JM posted the hearing on both petitions for Friday.Unlike regular bail pleas, Arumugam’s hearing saw some heat. The assistant public prosecutor told the JM that all medical facilities were being provided in the jail. But, Arumugam’s counsel argued that he was 72 and had health issues requiring specialised treatment.Besides, the prosecutor said the papers of the alleged grabbed land were yet to be produced in court. He argued that this could be held as an excuse for the delay in Arumugam’s release on bail. He claimed the whole issue was politically motivated. The JM, who dismissed the plea, later sat over a hearing on extension of remand, held via video-conference. The unruly scenes caused by DMK cadre on August 27 was cited as a reason for this. Arumugam’s custody was then extended by 15 days.
