New Delhi: The Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi has assured tight security arrangements for the 33rd National Games to be held in Guwahati from February 9 to 18.
Gogoi was high spirits after a presentation to the full committee of the Indian Olympic Association here on Wednesday, in which a complete appraisal on the preparation for the Games was put forward to the committee members.
IOA President Suresh Kalmadi said that he was satisfied with the presentation and was all praise for the Assam government.
''The infrastructure and stadia that the National Games committee in
Assam has set up, is the best in the country and can be compared with international standards,” he said.
Meanwhile, talking about the delays in hosting the games, Gogoi said, ''We want to organise the best Games in the country, both in terms of conduct and infrastructure. So we waited till we were satisfied with all our preparations.”
Gogoi said that no place in the world could be truly said to be safe in the current context, speaking about the security concerns owing to ULFA threats.
He pointed out that there had been threats to the contractors and suppliers even when the stadia were being constructed, but everything has been under control so far.
''Actually perception of people outside, about the situation in the state is based on heresay and media reports. But once people come to Assam, they will realise that the situation is normal like in any other city of the country,'' the Chief Minister said.
''I would like to give my personal assurance that there would be no security problems during the National Games in Assam. It's our primary duty to provide security and protection to the athletes and dignitaries who would be present for the duration of the Games,'' he added.
