Popular Front of India was arrested on Sunday on the grounds of hacking a hotel owner who was returning home from a mosque at Vaniyakkad, near Paravoor. The arrested, Ayoob, 19, of Vaniyakkad, is the second accused in the case.
The North Paravoor police said that the arrested is the brother of Shihab, the prime accused in the case, who was nabbed by the investigating team earlier.
“Shihab and Ayoob had led the seven-member gang that attacked Abdul Nazar. The Mahal committee, headed by Nazar, had condemned the activities of the armed gangs operating in Paravoor. The dispute had led to the retaliatory attack,” said investigating officer CI KA Abdul Salam.
The police will also seek a five-days custody of the accused. “The custodial interrogation of the accused is essential and we have to seize the weapons used by them,” the police said.
Ayoob had been hiding out at Sultan Bathery in Wayanad after the commencement of the probe. However, he made an attempt to visit his house on Saturday.
Following a tip-off about Ayoob’s visit, the cops tracked down his friends and relatives and arrested him from Elookkara near Kodungalloor. The accused is a final-year BCom student.
With Ayoob’s arrest, the police have nailed nine out of the 19 accused in the case. The police said Ayoob was also part of the gang that masterminded the plot to attack Nazar. The police have also received crucial information about the other members of the gang.
Nazar was returning home early morning after offering prayers at the Vaniyakkad Mosque when he was attacked by an armed gang. He was signaled to stop his scooter in the guise of asking the direction to a near-by place.
Six assailants had attacked him with swords and steel pipes. The victim is currently recovering from the injuries.
