In a targeted operation, officials from the Chennai District Food Safety Department carried out surprise inspections at various ‘pani puri’ outlets along Marina Beach on Friday, July 5. The inspections, aimed at ensuring food safety standards, included samples of ‘pani puri’, masala, chaat, and other key ingredients used in the popular street food.
Chennai District Food Safety Officer Satish Kumar highlighted the gravity of the situation and said that following reports and concerns, the Tamil Nadu government initiated tests on ‘pani puri’ samples collected from different locations, including Karnataka.
Results from these tests are expected within 3-4 days, with potential legal repercussions for any findings of adulteration or contamination. Concurrently, officials have intensified their surveillance of ‘pani puri’ vendors at crowded spots to prevent public health risks.
Dr Kumar also issued important guidelines for consumers, urging the public to avoid consuming ‘pani puri’ with bare hands and to refrain from ingesting overly colored water used in the preparation. Vendors must adhere strictly to hygiene practices, including wearing caps, and gloves, and using separate utensils for each ingredient, he emphasised.
Concerns about pre-prepared ‘pani puri’ units being sold in stores have also been raised. Dr Kumar said that the department is investigating the sources of these products and will take necessary actions against any violations discovered.
He concluded by advising consumers to choose hygienic locations for ‘pani puri’ consumption, ensuring both the venue and the food itself meet safety standards. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and pledge to take further actions as warranted to safeguard public health.
