KOCHI: In the wake of the rise in complaints against autorickshaw drivers who charge more than the meter reading, the city police have booked over 50 drivers this week. In a similar drive carried out last month, over 100 autorickshaw drivers were booked for flouting laws, plying without meter, over-charging and misbehaving with commuters. City Police Commissioner M R Ajith Kumar said the police had been carrying out checks on a regular basis. “It has been found that many autorickshaws from other parts of the district like Perumbavoor, Kothamangalam and Muvatuppuzha, operate within city limits without permit. We had been monitoring such vehicles and strict actions would be taken against them,” Ajith Kumar said. He added that the department planned to initiate more action with the coordination of the Motor Vehicles Department. “Action will be taken against autorickshaw drivers for extorting passengers and for plying without meter,” the commissioner added. In the meeting held recently by the resident associations with the police, complaints had poured in about autorickshaw drivers flouting norms and misbehaving. The shadow police have also been deployed to monitor the operations of the autorickshaw drivers. “The members of shadow police will disguise themselves as passengers. Any one found operating without meter or misbehaving with travellers will be booked,” M N Ramesh, Assistant Police Commissioner (Special Branch) said. “More than 5,000 autos ply on the city roads. Besides, the same number of autos come from other places and ply on the city areas without permit. The license and permit of the driver will be cancelled if anybody is caught doing this,” Motor Vehicles Department officials said.
