New Delhi: The terror king of Chambal, Nirbhay Gujjar was shot dead late on Monday night in Etawah district of UP.
Nirbhay, meaning 'fearless', had been a synonym for terror in the region for nearly 20 years.
The 47-year-old dacoit was killed in an encounter with the police and the Special Task Force in the jungles of Sitapur village.
There had been several attempts to catch him over the last few years and many of his accomplices had either surrendered on their own account or were killed in encounters.
Gujjar's 100-member gang, including at least five women members, was said to be the most active one along the UP-MP border, striking terror in Etawah, Jalaun and Kanpur region since 1981.
Nirbhay was wanted by the UP and MP police in as many as 200 cases, including murder and abduction.
His gang had apparently extorted at least Rs 3 crore as ransom after kidnapping over 200 persons.
Recently, Gujjar had expressed a desire to surrender.
But for that, he wanted Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav to come to Etawah, preside over a surrender ceremony and give him a Samajwadi Party nomination for the next Assembly polls.
Some firearms, including a pistol, a revolver, a 303 rifle, cartridges and binoculars, were recovered from the encounter site.
His gang also posses four AK-47 assault rifles.
Meanwhile the Gram Pradhan of Amola in Etawah, Ram Nagesh claimed that the STF had no hand in killing of the dacoit and that it was he who had shot dead Gujjar from point blank range.
