Bangalore faces water scarcity, water tanker mafia rules

Bangalore: India's IT capital and the most third important city Bangalore is facing drinking water problem. The rising temperature has almost touched 37-38 degree Celsius in Bangalore breaking previous records. The main source of water to the megapolis with a population of over 1 crore, the Cauvery river is also drying up in the summer.

The city corporation (BBMP) is arranging water tankers across the city. These tankers charge Rs 400-Rs 800 per tanker and diver the water supply for commercial uses.

According to BBMP sources, 110 villages have now become a part of greater Bangalore. These areas don't have water pipelines. The BBMP is supplying water through tankers to most of these areas and in some places it is digging bore wells.

Since the water table is also depleting, getting enough water for the daily usage has now become a huge challenge for the city administration.

Most of the private water tankers don't have the BBMP license and they don't even have the certificate for water quality. Some of them are illegally drawing the water from the lakes within BBMP limits and.

The health department officials fear that contaminated water may spread epidemic diseases like Cholera, Malaria etc across the city in May.

Environmental activists are fearing that the situation may aggravate, if the state government does not come out with a plan to crack down on the water mafia and also to ensure proper water supply.

What's your reaction?
