Bihar Police Introduces Real-Time 'Safe Travel Facility' for Women Through Dial 112
Women in Bihar will soon be able to travel safely to any destination by simply calling Dial 112.

In a significant step towards ensuring women’s safety, the Bihar Police’s Dial 112 unit is set to launch a new “Safe Travel Facility” for women starting September 15. Making the announcement on Wednesday, August 28, ADG (Wireless) Nirmal Kumar Azad shared that Bihar will become the third state in the country to offer such a service. This facility, which will be available 24/7 and free of charge, aims to provide a secure travel option for women across the state.

The Dial 112 service in Bihar, which currently provides emergency police assistance, fire brigade, and ambulance services, and is now being expanded. This expansion is being carried out with technical support from C-DAC. Bihar Police will maintain contact with women throughout their journey and regularly review their security to ensure their safety at all times.

According to ADG Azad, this initiative is being introduced ahead of the festive season to enhance the safety of women. Women in Bihar will soon be able to travel safely to any destination by simply calling 112. Initially, the service will be rolled out as a pilot project in six districts – Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, and Nalanda – starting September 5. The full implementation across the entire state is scheduled for September 15, ensuring that women can reach their homes safely at any time.

During Bihar Police Week 2024, every officer and personnel of the Bihar Police pledged five vows, among which the concept of zero tolerance against crimes against women was prominently emphasised. The Director General of Police, Bihar, introduced the principles of women’s safety and the idea of a “fearless woman.” Under this initiative, if any individual attempts to commit misbehaviour or any form of crime against women, the police will ensure immediate and decisive action. The new “Safe Travel Facility” will be instrumental in fully realising the “fearless woman” concept.

If a woman requests assistance during her journey by calling 112, her travel will be digitally monitored by the team. The Dial 112 team will regularly check in by phone to ensure her safety until she reaches her destination. If a woman expresses any concerns during her journey or fails to respond to a check-in call, immediate assistance will be dispatched through a Dial 112 Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) or a local police vehicle.

To further refine the service, feedback will be collected from women after they safely reach their destination. This input will help enhance the “Safe Travel Facility” based on their experiences. With the upcoming festive season, including Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja, when women often travel late at night for shopping and celebrations, Bihar Police has introduced this facility to ensure women can enjoy the festivities without fear and with a sense of security.
