THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state biodiversity board will organise awareness programmes here and nine coastal districts to sensitise the public on the significance of conservation of bio-diversity. The event will be inaugurated by Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan at Museum Hall on Tuesday, the International Bio-diversity Day. The theme for this year is conservation of marine biodiversity. Almost 41 percent of the world population reside within 100 kilometres of the sea shore. This increases the significance of protecting the marine biodiversity, the organisers told a press meet. K Muraleedharan MLA, will preside over the function while Chief Secretary K Jayakumar will be the chief guest. Prominent scientists from CMFRI (Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute) and Kerala University will deliver talks on the occasion. ‘Green Awards’ instituted by the biodiversity board would be distributed in the function. Green Individual Award has been won by Syam P S, Kidangara, Alappuzha and Syam Kumar N, Thenkurissi, Palakkad. Other award winners are - Tropical Institute of Ecological Science, Kottayam (Green Institution Award), Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Lakkidi, Wayanad and S V G Vocational Higher Secondary School, Pathanamthitta (Green School Award), Nehru Arts and Science College, Kanjhangad and Christ College, Irinjalakkuda (Green College Award), Sreekala M S and T R Ratheesh of India Vision and R Samban of Deshabhimani (Green Media Person ).
