CUTTACK: A driver of a pick-up truck and his helper were seriously injured in a bomb explosion inside the vehicle near OTM Colony at Choudwar on Friday afternoon. As mystery shrouds the incident, the helper Rashmiranjan Mohanty’s palm has been severed while the driver Vikas Samal has sustained injuries in the abdomen. Both have been admitted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital here and their condition is stated to be critical. The blast ripped apart the truck’s cabin and the vehicle caught fire, police said. According to reports, the duo were allegedly carrying some crude bombs in the vehicle. One of them went off on being dropped by the helper, who perhaps handled it as the severed palm suggests. Whether the bombs were being knowingly kept and transported somewhere is under investigation, police said. A rumour is doing the round that the explosives were being taken somewhere in connection with the forthcoming panchayat polls. Police said the vehicle’s ownership is being verified and all angles are looked into.
