Police and fire officials are investigating the large fire.

London: Police and fire officials were investigating a large fire believed to be inside an old bus garage in east London, police said Monday. The fire was sending a large plume of thick black smoke over the city.

Asked about the possibility that it was connected to terrorism, a police spokeswoman said only that it was too early to speculate.

The spokeswoman said the fire started at around 12:15 p.m. (7:15 a.m. ET).

Fire crews deployed to the scene, which is only a few miles from the Canary Wharf business district, a spokesman for the London fire brigade said.

"We have around 30 firefighters down there dealing with the incident," a fire brigade spokesman said. "It is too early as yet to say what has caused it.”

More updates awaited.
