CHENNAI: A clash between two rival factions on their college premises ended in a tragedy when a 21-year-old student drowned in the Cooum at Nandanam on Monday. His body was fished out of the river on Tuesday and the police have registered a case of suspicious death. While the incident is still under investigation, preliminary inquiry by the Saidapet police showed that that there was a verbal tiff between a group led by K Thanigaivel, a second-year BA student, and a rival faction in the Nandanam Arts College over participating in a fast held on LB Road in Adyar in support of anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare. On Friday, the students decided to participate in the fast, but Thanigaivel told his friends to stay away, which infuriated the rival group.Already, there was tension between the two factions on the issue of Bus Day celebrations and Friday’s faceoff added to it, sources said. On Monday, there was an altercation between the groups in the college, leading to a clash. Thanigaivel was chased by an armed gang and to escape, he scaled the compound wall, but fell into the Cooum that was flowing close to the college and drowned.
