Bold actions against CPM leaders create foes within Police force

The bold actions taken against the CPM leaders in the recent murder cases have created foes for the Kerala Police in the force itself. The phenomenon  was first noticed when the attempts to nab Kunhanandan, one of the key accused in the T P Chandrasekharan murder case, failed continuously. Kunhanandan managed to escape from the dragnet of the Special Investigation Team (SIT). The confidential decisions and actions taken by the SIT was leaked out to him, allegedly, from the police force itself.

The situation worsened when the police took stringent action against P Jayarajan in the Shukoor murder case.  The hartal which followed on the next day left 57 police personnel injured. Attacks on the houses of police personnel were also reported.

“The houses of police personnel investigating the cases against CPM workers were targeted. The information about  policemen who were involved in the raids and other actions could not reach the party workers unless leaked out from the force itself. Neither can they identify the police personnel and their houses without the help of  policemen from the same station. Though there are no visible differences in the force, this kind of betrayals are taking place in the police force,” a police personnel said.

The most disturbing issue is that the political differences are destroying the unity of the force. Police associations are concerned about the fact. The Kerala Police Association passed a resolution on the matter at its state conference held in Tirur recently.

Some police personnel allege that political organisations are trying to create friction in the force for their vested interests. The police personnel who lost home, furniture and crops in the recent attacks are legally restricted to approach the court seeking compensation. However, Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishanan denied any kind of friction in the police force.

“Though there are different party supporters in the police force, they are working together on key issues. I have not noticed any kind of such issues in the force,” he said, denying the allegations raised by the police personnel.

Meanwhile, one of the senior intelligence officers evaded the query saying that they would not disclose anything on the matter.
