THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) is planning projects worth Rs 20,000 crore in the state. The BPCL Kochi Refinery is set to increase its capacity to 15.5 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA), BPCL officials told Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Thursday.The refinery presently has a capacity of 9.5 MMTPA. Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd chairman and managing director R K Singh, who called on the Chief Minister, said that the capacity addition would be effected through the Integrated Refinery Expansion Project (IREP) at a cost of over Rs 13,000 crore. The project also envisages setting up of downstream petrochemical complex in the joint sector at an estimated cost of Rs 7,000 crore. As part of the project, the quality of auto fuels will be upgraded into meet Euro-IV/V norms. At the discussions, Singh also agreed to enhance the BPCL’s investment in the proposed Kannur International Airport.
