BHUBANESWAR: Students of Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) on Monday demanded rollback of arbitrary fee hike in private engineering colleges. Alleging that the fee structure in private colleges is much higher than what has been fixed by the State Government, the students said they are being forced to pay thousands of rupees more on different counts. They said the college managements charge Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 60,000 extra for providing substandard laptops, internet connection, books, bus fees and other fees on miscellaneous grounds. The students further alleged that as the colleges do not adhere to the academic calendar, publication of results is delayed and even courses are also not completed in time. “This affects the students’ careers as they cannot produce their marksheets during placement drives and subsequently forfeit the job opportunities,” said Dwarika Nath Mohanty, president of BPUT Students’ Organisation. The BPUT students submitted a memorandum, addressed to BPUT Vice-Chancellor J K Satpathy in this regard, to the Registrar D K Satpathy at BPUT’s Gandamunda office here. Besides seeking V-C’s intervention, they wanted the BPUT Central Placement Cell be made functional at the earliest for the benefit of the students. “Many private engineering colleges are resorting to fake campus placements. Though the companies assure students of recruitment, many of them are thrown out of jobs after six months of joining. If all placements are done through the Central Placement Cell, this problem can be addressed to a large extent,” reasoned Mohanty. The students said if the BPUT does not pay heed to their demands, they would shut down all the engineering colleges across the State.UTKAL STUDENTS SEEK RENOVATION OF HOSTELS: In a separate incident, PG students of Utkal University gheraoed PG Council Chairman P K Sarkar demanding renovation of hostels of the varsity. They alleged that all the 12 hostels are lying in a dilapidated condition and require urgent repair. This apart, they sought immediate opening of the sixth ladies hostel on the university campus. Stating that though the hostel building was inaugurated two years back, it was yet to be allotted to the girl students due to apathy of the varsity authorities. Sarkar assured the students to allot the sixth hostel by September 5 and hold a residential committee meeting to look into the other demands.
