BHUBANESWAR: A bridge over Gangua nullah, constructed by a builder, was brought down by the Water Resources Department after locals opposed the structure. The bridge had allegedly been constructed in violation of existing norms. Though Water Resources Department is supposed to give sanction to any such bridge, it had not. With floods causing havoc on the outskirts of the City, the Gangua nullah is crucial for flushing of the storm water. Besides, the Government is currently creating about eight nullahs to give passage to the storm water from the City. The bridge which was being built had blocked a portion of the Gangua nullah’s passage. While the locals had formed an outfit opposing the bridge by the builder who had turned a blind eye to the uproar, the local legislator Ashok Panda had picked the fight on behalf of the residents and wrote to the Water Resources Department in this regard. Besides, Sisupalgarah Fort, an ASI protected site, being within a radius of 200 metres, construction was strictly banned. Once the issue came to light, thanks to media, the Water Resources Department asked the District Collector and Revenue Department to investigate. A team, led by a Chief Engineer (Irrigation), brought down the illegal structure on Wednesday morning.
