Busted, but India retains ban on LTTE
Rebel group was first outlawed in India in 1992 after Rajiv Gandhi's assassination.

New Delhi: India on Friday extended the ban on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) as an "unlawful" group by two more years, a Home Ministry official said.

"The central government has extended the ban on the LTTE as an unlawful association by two years. The notification to this effect was issued today (Friday)," the official said in a statement.

The group was crushed by the Sri Lankan military in May last year, killing its founder Velupillai Prabhakaran and all his top aides.

The notification said the possibility of remaining cadres of LTTE using India and especially Tamil Nadu as a rear base for their re-grouping activities cannot be ruled out.

It also said the possibility of their entering in the guise of Tamil refugees also cannot be ruled out.

The LTTE was first outlawed in India in 1992 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, a year after the rebels assassinated former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Since then, the ban has been extended every two years.
