Hissar: Hissar has been on the boil since Wednesday when two dalits, a 17-year-old Polio stricken girl and her 70-year-old father were burnt to death by upper caste Jats after an altercation. The dalits refused to cremate the bodies till cases were booked against the guilty.
Blackened walls, a disabled girl's cycle, charred clothes are mute witness to the horror story of 17-year-old Suman, a dalit girl burnt to death along with her father two days ago.
Angry villagers refused to let the bodies be cremated until they got an assurance of action against the upper caste youth who allegedly carried out the atrocity. They were retaliating for being beaten up by the locals for harassing their women.
Dalits from Hissar and other parts of Haryana also want cases registered against a DSP, an SHO, a tehsildar among others. They claim the police did nothing when dalit houses were being burnt down. Cases have now been registered against the police officials.
While dalit leaders complain they are being targeted by the powerful, the upper caste Jats say they are being needlessly implicated. Cases for murder and attempt to murder have been registered against 35 upper caste members.
