CBI Seeks Interpol Arrest Warrant Against Mallya

New Delhi: Days after Britain refused to deport business tycoon Vijay Mallya to India in a loan fraud case, Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday sought an Interpol arrest warrant against the liquor baron.

Sources said, ED has written to CBI to obtain a Red Corner Notice (RCN) against Mallya from Interpol. "We have asked the CBI to pursue the case because it is the nodal office for execution of Interpol warrants in India," he said.

An RCN is issued "to seek the location and arrest of wanted persons with a view to extradition or similar lawful action" in a criminal case probe.

Once the said notice is issued, the Interpol seeks to arrest the person concerned in any part of the world and notifies that country to take his or her custody for further action at their end.

The agency (ED) has been wanting to make Mallya join investigations "in person" in the over Rs 900 crore IDBI loan fraud case in which it registered a criminal case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) early this year.

The Indian probe agencies are struggling hard to make Mallya join the probe despite revocation of his passport and deportation bid to bring him back from the UK. His deportation became more difficult after Britain has made it clear that Mallya cannot be deported and asked India to seek his extradition instead.

Mallya, according to sources, left for London by the 9W122 Delhi-London Jet Airways flight at 12.54 pm on March 2, days before a consortium of banks approached the Supreme Court for his passport to be impounded.
