New Delhi: Mobile phone subscribers who are dissatisfied with the quality of service will soon get a respite - they can not only change the operator but also retain their existing numbers by paying a nominal fee.
Communications Minister, A. Raja on Friday announced the guidelines for selecting two companies that will act as clearing houses to facilitate the change of mobile phone operators by subscribers - also called mobile number portability.
"We will start working out the process for mobile number portability in the next two months. It would come into place in the metros by March or so,” Raja told a press conference here.
“We have also finalised the schedule for extending number portability across all circles by September 2009 - one year from the grant of licence," he said, adding that the country would be divided into two zones of 11 circles each for the purpose.
