Chennai: Periyapandi, an inspector in Chennai’s Maduravoyal Police Station, was shot in Rajasthan when he was there to nab two people suspected of a robbery.
Police officials say, the officer was part of an eight-member special team that was in Rajasthan to nab two suspects who had allegedly drilled a hole in the roof of a jewellery shop in Rajamanagalam, Chennai. The robbers looted around 3.5 kilograms of gold during the November 16 incident.
"Around 2.30 am today, Officer Periyapandi’s team was about to nab the prime suspects when they were reportedly pelted with stones and attacked with iron rods. As the officer was chasing one of the suspects, he was shot. Officer Periyapandi died on the spot,” said a police official.
Other policemen in the team are also seriously injured.
Two days ago, Periyapandi's team had nabbed four people from Rajasthan, who allegedly helped their relative drill a hole in the roof of the gold shop.
The nabbed suspects as Chennaram, father of 28-year-old C Nathuram, who is the main suspect, and his relatives Ellaram, Shankar Lal and Dauram. Police have launched a search for Nathuram, a native of Pali district in Rajasthan and Dinesh Chowdary (20) from Jodhpur district in Rajasthan.
On the day of the incident, the gold shop’s owner, Mukesh, along with his father had gone for lunch around 1 pm and returned at 4 in the evening. They were shocked to find 3.5 kilograms of gold, 4.5 kg of silver and Rs 2 lakh in cash missing along with the CCTV cameras installed in the shop.
Talking to News18, a police official said that the culprits had approached Mukesh on the pretext of renting his shop. They even paid his an advance. “After noting the owner’s movements, the culprits decided to break-in,” said the official.
The accused were identified with the help of CCTV footage available from nearby buildings. They are suspects in other similar cases as well.
Based on a tip-off, a special team was formed and sent to Rajasthan where they nabbed four men from a village in Pali district of Rajasthan. It was during the chase to nab the two prime accused that officer Periyapandi lost his life.
