DHENKANAL: One dengue death and 21 suspected cases in the villages bordering Dhenkanal and Angul have spread panic in the region.The 5-km open drain from the main bus stand to Chadan Bazaar here, which is a potential breeding ground for mosquitoes, has the residents worried.Two persons each of Khajuriakata and Gondia were sent to Cuttack three days back after their blood samples tested positive for dengue, said CDMO B C Behera. Awareness programmes are on at primary and community health centres, he added. The CDMO has been directed to launch awareness drive on dengue through posters, community meetings, loudspeakers and rallies. Collector Bishnu Prasad Panda too claimed that steps had been taken to promote awareness at block level. However, it is alleged that the awareness drive is yet to be taken up on a regular basis in the disease-prone areas.Meanwhile, a civil society organisation has placed billboards at crowded places in the municipality and rural areas with posters and leaflets being distributed regularly. Campaign vehicles with loudspeakers too have been pressed into service. The organisation is also conducting meetings in the villages.The campaign is on for the last 12 days with the organisation bearing all the expenses, said PKV Developers Pvt Ltd director Pravat Behera.The Rotary Club here is also spreading awareness through loudspeakers for the last six days. Dhenkanal Rotary Club president N Nanda alleged that health authorities had promised to release ` 750 per day for the purpose but later declined.
