CHENNAI: Discordant voices, in reaction to the Assembly’s resolution and the HC order on the the death sentence to the three convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, insist that pardoning those convicted of murder would only serve to boost terrorism in the country.“If you go on reducing punishment for such activities, it will only lead to more terrorism. This would also mean that terrorists like those responsible for the attacks in Mumbai or on Parliament would also be let off,” said E V K S Elangovan. The Congress was the sole dissenter to the otherwise unanimous resolution. He claimed that the basis on the call for clemency was wrong. “That the trio should not be hung because they are Tamils is not right.” “That the trio should not be hung because they are Tamils is not right. You cannot narrow down the terms of reference at a time when terrorism is a major issue worldwide,” he said. The former Union minister also hit out at ally and DMK chief M Karunanidhi over his changing stance on the issue. He refused to comment on the verdict of the Madras High Court, saying he had his reservations on the order.
