CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, on Saturday, hiked the doles being given to students belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities, staying in government hostels. She also increased the number of students to be accommodated in existing hostels by 1,500 from the academic year 2011-12.The Chief Minister said the assistance of Rs 25 given at present would be increased to Rs 50 per school student and the assistance for college students would be hiked from Rs 35 to Rs 75, an official release here said.The measure would benefit 1.20 lakh students, staying in various government hostels in the State and this would cost the government, an additional annual expenditure of Rs 3.20 crore.As more SC, ST students are seeking accommodation in hostels and many could not get it, the Chief Minister ordered accommodation of 1,500 students during the year 2011-12. This would cost the government an annual expenditure of Rs 1.18 crore.
