MYSORE: Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda inaugurated the Centre of Excellence for Studies in Classical Kannada here on Saturday, in the presence of Union Minister for Corporate Affairs Veerappa Moily, Union Minister of State for HRD Dr Daggubati Purandeshwari.The centre housed at the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) will carry out research, documentation, propagation and teaching of the language in compliance with Kannada being conferred the classical status. It gives me great pleasure to inaugurate the centre, especially at a time when persons from the state have won the Jnanpith and Saraswati Samman awards, the CM said.He urged the Union government to release the remaining amount for the Centre and provide it autonomy to help it function as a university. Promising all help to the centre, Gowda said: “This centre should not restrict its work to only language and instead spread its wings to culture, music and technology.”‘Celebration over classical status muted’Veerappa Moily, who was also present, opined that the celebration witnessed in Tamil Nadu when Tamil was conferred classical status was missing in here. “Kannadigas should develop more love for their language,” he asserted, while stressing on the need to improve Kannada vocabulary in order to make it more relevant. “This centre should be a centre of excellence in the real sense... We must use the classical status in order to spread the language globally,” he said.
