BHUBANESWAR: There is a need to promote traditional performing arts like Pala and Daskathia, said Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Inaugurating the World Music Day celebrations on the premises of Utkal University of Culture on Tuesday, Naveen said cultural federations had been formed at block level to provide extensive support to traditional art forms and music.Naveen regretted Odissi music being denied its rightful place in Indian classical arena. “It has a rich legacy dating back to the 2nd century BC when emperor Kharvel patronised the music form. In the 16th century, many celebrated musicians and poets have contributed immensely to the growth of Odissi music,” he said. University of Culture has been doing a lot of research in the field of music, he said, adding that the Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi and the Culture Department should work with leading musicians of the State to give Odissi music classical status. “The State Government will provide all the support in this direction,” Naveen added.Among others, Culture and Tourism Minister Prafulla Samal, Puri MP Pinaki Mishra, Utkal University of Culture Vice-Chancellor Amiya Kumar Pattanayak spoke. Later, the Chief Minister went round an exhibition of paintings and sculptures, organised by the institute to mark the occasion.
