New Delhi: Colonel G S Sarna, who was killed in a gunbattle with militants in Baramulla district on Saturday, was cremated with in the Capital with full military honours.
Colonel G S Sarna was the commanding officer of the 29 Rashtriya Rifles and was leading a search operation about 28 kms from Srinagar when the group of terrorists hiding in the area opened fire injuring the officer.
He was hit by two bullets in the abdomen and taken to the Army Base Hospital in Srinagar where doctors declared him dead.
Sarna is the senior-most Army officer to have died fighting militancy in Jammu and Kashmir this year.
Two soldiers were also injured in the gunbattle with the terrorists believed to be belonging to the Lashkar-e-Toiba.
The killing is a reminder of the continuing challenge posed by the proxy war. Over a hundred Army troopers have been killed in 2006 while battling cross-border terrorism in J&K.
