KOZHIKODE: The state government must stop the practice of giving the Best Comedian Award and consider comedians for the Best Actor Award, said actor Salim Kumar. He was speaking at a meet-the-press programme organised by the Calicut Press Club here on Wednesday. “Different television channels’ awards for the same can be understandable as they have several other interests. But the government should not follow them and must consider comedians also for the best actor award. Comedy is also part of the ‘navarasas’ and it should be given the importance it deserves,” he said. Salim Kumar said he was working on a comedy movie, which has a new style of direction. Explaining that critically-acclaimed cinemas in Malayalam film industry are not getting the reception they deserve, he said, “though the film Adaminte Makan Abu won national and state awards, it was hard for us to get a good distributor. So I thought about distributing the film in Malabar.” Several directors approached me with the same kind of story as Adaminte Makan Abu after winning the national and state awards. But, I have not accepted anyone, Salim Kumar said. Admitting that the good films face fund crunch at every stage, he said there were several situations that he had to pay the amount on behalf of producers to complete the project. “I have acted in Adaminte Makan Abu without any remuneration. For the production of the film Achanurangatha Veedu, I shelled out `1 lakh. To act in the film Bridge, I took only `101 as remuneration,” he said. Asked about his opinion about film actors holding position in Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, he said that the trend was no good for theatre and music. Adaminte Makan Abu’s director Salim Ahmed said that the film would be released in about 70 centres in the state on June 24.
