THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city police might not yet have nabbed the culprits behind the gangland murder of Kannadi Shaji, but on Tuesday they could avert another similar manslaughter by nabbing six goondas who were engaged in hatching an execution plan. And, the police are thanking the menacing chain-snatchers in the city for helping in nailing the potential murderers. Because, the suspects landed in the custody during an intense drive launched to nab the chain-snatchers.The six men have been identified as Sivaraman, Satheesh Kumar, Sivakumar, Kumaradas, Ganesh and Vinod. They were arrested from their hiding place at Thoppilkadavu at Soman Nagar, near Karamana, during the wee hours of Tuesday.Police sources said that the six men were members of the gang led by the notorious gangster Soju alias Ammakoru Makan, who is currently a remand prisoner. The men have confessed to the police that they had secretly gathered at the lodge, from where they were nabbed, to devise a plan to execute another gang leader Ambili, alias Chozhattupettah Ambili. The feud between Ambili and Soju dates back to about five years, which saw a bloodbath in which both sides lost lives in a series of murders. It all started when Ambili allegedly contracted thugs to execute Ani alias Motta Ani, the brother-in-law of Soju, in 2006. Soju, in retaliation, killed another goonda, Binu, who had allegedly aided Ambili to murder Ani. Ambili’s gang hit back by taking the life of Roby Das, who was an accused in the murder of Binu.A few days ago, Soju was arrested by the city police on charges of extortion. He has been in judicial custody ever since. The six men were produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody on Tuesday.Meanwhile, several others have landed in the custody of the police in the special drive launched to book chain- snatchers. Over 20 people have been taken into custody so far. Among them, cases were registered against five people, following which they were produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.
