TIRUPUR: The Dharapuram Police cracked a major robbery case by arresting one of a five-member gang and recovering 28 sovereigns of gold jewellery and 1/4 kg of silver ornaments from him. The arrested was identified as Vinothkumar alias Sakthivel (26).As per the case, Dharapuram based jeweller Rishi Krishna Kumar was returning home in a motorcycle when he was waylaid by three persons near his house at Seetha Nagar on the Pollachi Road on April 16. He was carrying 57.5 sovereigns of gold and 4.5 kg of silver ornaments from the shop. The gang attacked him with sickles and iron rods and fled the spot after robbing the ornaments.  Subsequently, the Dharapuram Police registered a case and began investigations. Two special teams were formed to nab the attackers.  Following a tip-off, the special team led by Inspector Ilamurugan arrested Vinothkumar from Oorappakkam in Kancheepuram district. On questioning, he revealed that he and his aides — Kannadasan alias Abdulla and Mohammed Bilal — had assaulted the jeweller. He also confessed to having robbed five sovereigns of gold chain from Umadevi of Nanjiyampalayam in Dharapuram. He said two others — Onan Senthil and Arokiyadoss — were part of their gang, which was involved in various robberies in many other districts.Further investigations revealed that Vinothkumar was involved in 14 cases, including robbery and murder, in various districts. Kannadasan and Arokiyadoss have been already arrested by Coimbatore district police in connection with some robbery cases. A search is on for Bilal and Senthil.
