Cormorants, Night Herons And Storks Arrive At West Bengal's Kulik Bird Sanctuary

During the summer vacations, people love visiting regions rich with wildlife, for some sightseeing or spotting a rare animal or bird. Local18 reports that birds have started to arrive at the Kulik Bird Sanctuary, in West Bengal. Tourists from all over the country come to get a glimpse of the airborne creatures.

As per the reports by Local18, the birds usually arrive back in the sanctuary, located in Raiganj, in May. This year, since the season of rain came late, it delayed their return. The news is confirmed by the forest department. The Kulik Bird Sanctuary is a popular tourist spot in the Raiganj town.

More information states that birds like cormorants, night herons and species of open bill stork come to the place from Northeast Asia as well as South Asia. People from all across the state visit the area to see the birds. According to Local18, the Kulik Bird Sanctuary holds a good rank in Asia for being the choice place for bird migration. It is also listed in the Limca Book of World Records.

People can visit the place throughout the year; most come from West Bengal. The migrated birds stay in the sanctuary till December. During their time here, the birds give birth to their offspring and are involved in their nurturing. By January, they return to the countries they came from.

According to the official Uttar Dinajpur website, the Kulik Bird Sanctuary is home to around 164 species of birds, while 70,000 to 80,000 birds come for migration every year. Covering an area of 1.30 square kilometres, the sanctuary is sometimes called the second-largest bird sanctuary in Asia. Birds like flycatchers, kites, owls, woodpeckers, kingfishers, drongos and a lot more can be found here all year.
