VELLORE: The Vellore Corporation has launched a tirade against illegal encroachment on land belonging to the Government. A private school, which reportedly had encroached upon Corporation land, was demolished on Tuesday. The demolition was in response to the order by the Vellore Corporation Mayor P Karthiyayini, who paid a visit to the Sathuvachari zone on Tuesday. She earlier paid a visit to the zonal office. She then visited the gym of the Manamagizh Mandram and promised action.On learning about the Corporation land being encroached upon by a private school in Phase III area, she immediately ordered demolition of the building. She also said that notices were sent to those, who have encroached upon the Corporation land in Vellore. Legal action would be taken against them in due course, she added. Corporation Commissioner Seeni Ajmal Khan said, we have collected the land details laid as per the Government Act of 1986. According to that, over 10 acres of land is feared to have been encroached upon by the public in Vellore Corporation and it is estimated to be worth `50 to `100 crore.According to the officials, notices to around 55 encroachers have already been issued and 100 new cases have been identified. Moreover, intimation would soon be issued to them. Talking about the response from the encroachers, he said, people who have indulged in the act knowingly are trying to cover it up. But, most of the building owners were not aware of the encroachment and were cheated by their sellers. In that case, we advice them to file a criminal case against the sellers, he added.
