CHENNAI: Seeing this wiry man riding a bicycle with no seat, no chain and no brakes, but with his hands to keep the wheels on move and carrying a flag on his handle bar is enough to catch the curiosity of any onlooker. The story of Laxhmekant Maity(38) from a village in Orissa, who has cycled hundreds of miles through dust and sun in his chainless, seatless, brakeless cycle, for the sake of HIV awareness is truly inspirational. He and his wife Manarama Maity(31) started this momentous journey on July 20 from their village Rajnagar in Kendrapara, Orissa, and now after crossing miles in Orissa and Andhra Pradesh, have reached Chennai. They plan to cycle for the next 36 months covering all the states, to spread the message of the twisted red ribbon.Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Laxhmekant Maity said, “ I am an RMP doctor at my village. When I came to know that there is no cure for HIV I was inspired to carry this message to people from different walks of life. This plan had been in my head for a while when my wife also agreed to it and we decided to hit the road.”Both husband and wife, every day, have a target of cycling 40-50 km, and they start the day at 8 am, post breakfast and go on till 7 pm. In Tamil Nadu TANSACS has supported them, by providing lodging and food and also awareness materials like handbills which they distribute on their road trip.
