When noted filmmaker Prakash Jha backs a film, it is certainly for a reason and this comic caper by director Ritesh Menon is definitely one of those films with an in depth message that is open for interpretations by the audience. 'Crazy Cukkad Family' has all types of characters that we come across in a family.
There is a wannabe Mrs. India played by Shilpa Shukla, who couldn't fulfill her dream of becoming a Miss India because of her father. A wife, who is considered trash by her husband. A husband (Ninad Kamat), who is bullied and disrespected by his wife so much so that he develops an alter ego and cross dresses to vent out his frustration. A homosexual son, who marries in New Zealand and needs money for sex change and another son who needs a green card to settle abroad. Each member in the Beri family has their own sets of problems and the only solution is their dad's sprawling property, which is so big that it has its own pin code. The head of Beri family, Babuji ( Yusuf Husain) is on his death bed. His will is with his lawyer, who has been told to read it out to his children only when all of them are married.
The storyline is simple and very precisely has the narrator described every part of it. Since the run time is also of 1 hour 46 minutes, the movie manages to keep the viewer intrigued. Interestingly, the film deals with homosexuality in a very normal way- which perhaps is a first for Hindi mainstream cinema. Because in most comedy films, homophobic jokes are the norm and in 'Crazy Cukkad Family' it is a welcoming change to see an important character of the film being gay and his family accepting his sexual orientation.
While the plot is predictable, credible actors play their part extremely well and lift the script to a whole new level. Lyricist and writer Swanand Kirkire, who plays the role of the eldest son in the Beri family has done flawless acting and deserves applaud for his comic timing. Shilpa Shukla too has pulled off her role quite well.
Since small budget films are doing really well at the box-office these days, it is quite possible that the viewers might applaud these actors for their performance.
