THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Criminals are taking on new ‘roles.’ While one assumed himself as a Sub-Inspector, another had a unique style of stealing behind the ‘curtain’ of drama. Johnson alias Karatte Johny, 32, was arrested for entering the Neyyanttikara Sub Jail pretending as a Sub-Inspector. According to the police, Johny, a history-sheeter at Poovar police station, was arrested the other day when he tried to meet his friends inside the prison pretending to be a police officer. He approached the prison authorities and told them that he was a Sub-Inspector, but they developed doubts as he did not have an identity card. Police said that there was tension in the nearby area of Poovar a few days back. One man was killed in connection with the incident. Two persons were arrested and sent to the Neyyattinkara Sub-Jail. Johny had come to the prison to meet them. Johny, an accused in several cases, had been absconding and was about to be included in the Goonda list, police said. Dramatic ThiefHowever Ramesh’s style was something different. He ran a drama troupe and used it as a ‘curtain’ for stealing. It was only a few days back that the ‘secret’ of Ramesan alias Ramesh of Mathasserikkonam, Chirayankeezhu, came to light. Police said that Ramesh was the producer of Attingal Vedavyasa Theatre and used steal from houses near the venues where his troupe performed. While his troupe performed, he utilized the two-three hours time well in stealing from the nearby houses. “This was a new style in stealing and he earned lakhs from this,” said CI Pramod Kumar. Ramesh started his ‘career’ by running a toddy shop and later turned to a drama troupe. He was first caught by the police from Varkala a few years back and then by the Medical College Police a few days ago.
