Crisis management cell in Thiruvananthapuram

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a bid to save its face in the garbage issue, Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has charted out an action plan, which is expected to find at least a temporary solution to the problem. It would open a crisis management cell in the Corporation office where the public can call up for help regarding garbage disposal. The local body also identified 22 spots where landfilling of garbage would be done.Mayor K Chandrika told a press meet here on Saturday that the public can contact 9496434517 or 2320821 (extension 703) to get help from the crisis management cell.In the 22 spots which have been identified, Kudumbashree women would segregate the waste and dispose of it. The Mayor said that the Corporation was ready to sell market-waste to pig-farms or other such places where they were in demand. The Corporation would not collect waste at this point. “The public should clean and store plastic waste at their homes. Once the plastic shredder unit is opened, we would collect it,” the Mayor said.The places identified for landfilling are Vizhinjam-harbour area, spots in Medical  College, Vattiyoorkavu, Sasthamangalam, Chenthitta, Sreekaryam, Beach, Chalai, Manacaud, Thiruvallam, Nanthancode, Ulloor, Fort, Secretariat, Kudappanakunnu, Jagathy, Nemom, Palayam, Attipra, Thirumala, Poonthura and Kadakampally. In these areas, many school and pond premises have been identified which might lead to a ruckus in the coming days.In the case of identification of Vizhinjam harbour area, where the garbage issue is already at a high, among the land filling zones, a conflict with the Corporation’s decision cannot be ruled out.The monitoring committee for solving the garbage crisis under the leadership of Transport Minister V S Sivakumar met later in the evening at the Corporation office and communicated the action plan to political leaders in the district.
