CHENNAI: Noting that the distribution of colour TV sets in Tamil Nadu under the free CTV scheme was ‘irregular’ and defeated the objective it was created for. The CAG r eport tabled in the State Legislative Assembly on Wednesday has revealed that 11,354 CTVs were supplied to households in two districts that were without electricity connections.A much-talked-about freebie of the previous DMK government, the scheme was an electoral promise of the party in the 2006 Assembly election. “The scheme was introduced in June 2006 to provide entertainment to women and enable them to acquire general knowledge,” the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, for the year ending March 31, 2011, noted. But the scheme envisaged to ensure that the habitations of the beneficiaries of these free CTVs had both electricity and cable connections.Yet, scrutiny of the records with the District Collectors of Erode and Madurai revealed that of the 5,45,847 CTVs distributed between 2006-2009 in the districts, 11,354 CTVs procured at `2.71 crore reached households without electricity connections, the report said.Despite referring the issue to the state government, no response was received as of November 2010, the CAG report included.
