New Delhi: The bail plea of CWG Organising Committee (OC) former Deputy Director General Surjeet Lal, arrested for his alleged role in awarding a contract to a Swiss firm at an exorbitant cost, was dismissed on Friday by a Delhi court.
Special Judge Talwant Singh dismissed Lal's bail plea saying that he was "part and parcel" of the conspiracy to award the contract to install the Timing, Scoring and Results (TSR) system for the games.
The court said if enlarged on bail at this juncture, Lal, a co-accused of former OC Chairman Suresh Kalmadi in the case, may influence witnesses against him.
"The charge sheet has been already filed and the list of witnesses along with the documents of depositions of the witnesses have been supplied to the present accused (Lal) and he knows who exactly are the witnesses in the case and are going to depose against him," the court said, agreeing with the CBI's apprehension that he may influence witnesses.
"Moreover, the accused (Lal) was part and parcel of the conspiracy to cheat the government exchequer of more than Rs 95 crore and his crime is of serious nature," the court said.
"In view of the aforementioned facts and circumstances of the case, accused is not entitled to bail at this stage and his bail application is dismissed," the court added.
