Mumbai: The Maharashtra State Electricity Board or the MSEB has sent a proposal to the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to increase power cuts in the state.
The power shortage in the state has gone up to 6,800 MW from 5,500 MW.
MERC will hear the proposal on Monday.
The MSEB is planning to increase average load shedding by two and a half hours daily across Maharashtra.
Now that's likely to hit industries in the state. Industries are currently shut for one day a week. With the new plan they will be shut for two days a week.
Reacting to the Maharashtra government’s step, industrialist Rahul Bajaj said, “Such steps will discourage investments in the state”.
Also, Pune so far has had no power cuts. But with the current power shortage of 6,800 MW, Pune will also have two hours of load shedding everyday.
Maharashtra is desperately waiting for power supply to start from the Dabhol project but it doesn't seem like it’s happening anytime soon.
Till November the electricity from Dabhol will not be available because the GAIL pipeline is not completed.
Though, the pipeline is inching along in some areas, work is stalled in several others. Unless this work is completed in its stipulated time Maharashtra’s dream of getting 2,200 MW of power supply will not be fulfilled at least in the next seven months.
