Supriya Sule, daughter of Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar plunged into politics by joining NCP.

Mumbai: Supriya Sule, daughter of Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Monday plunged into active politics by joining Nationalist Congress Party founded by her father.

"Today, she filled up the form as an active member of the Nationalist Congress Party", NCP state unit President Arun Gujrathi announced at a meeting of the party on Monday evening. Pawar was also present at the meeting.

Earlier this year, she had criticised the Congress-NCP led state government for neglecting fund allocation for 'ashramshalas' (rest houses).

While welcoming Supriya into the party fold, Gujrathi said "we now hope that you would spare some time from your work for the backward classes and get involved in party work."

Sharad Pawar’s decision to keep his daughter Supriya Sule out of the second generation of leaders he intends to groom, had raised many eyebrows in political circles.

Previously, sons of some of the most prominent faces in Indian politics have already followed in the footsteps of their fathers.

But of late, daughters of politicians like L K Advani, late former actor Sunil Dutt and now Sharad Pawar stepping into their fathers’ footsteps is making the presence of women in the current crop of young politicians felt.

What's your reaction?
