Union minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday announced that the completed parts of the Dwarka Expressway and Urban Extension Road (UER) 2 may be inaugurated in the next 10-12 days, depending on the availability of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Gadkari, who was speaking to the media in Delhi, said that the PM has been requested to inaugurate these roads.
“We have requested the Prime Minister to inaugurate the completed packages of UER 2 and Dwarka Expressway. I hope that in the next 10-12 days we will get his time and inaugurate these roads,” the minister said, adding that around 90 per cent work on these roads has been completed.
According to MoRTH documents seen by News18, the work on the 30-kilometre Dwarka Expressway is 90 per cent complete, and for the 76-km UER 2, it is 85 per cent.
UER 2, being built for Rs 8,000 crore, is divided into five packages, and work is more than 90 per cent done in four of them. The remaining package is 70 per cent complete.
The Dwarka Expressway, costing Rs 8,662 crore, is divided into four packages, and on three of these 90 per cent of work is over. The remaining package has seen 79 per cent progress.
Dwarka Expressway
Last month, News18 reported that the Dwarka Expressway is expected to be ready by March.
The expressway was scheduled to be completed by April 2024.
It was planned as an alternate road link between Delhi and Gurugram, aimed at easing the traffic flow on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway.
The Dwarka Expressway will start from Shiv Murti in Delhi and terminate at Kherki Dhaula on NH-8 in Gurugram, completely bypassing the existing congestion on the highway. It is the first phase or the northern part of the Gurugram Ring Road.
The expressway is a much-awaited project for the people of the two cities. It was initially planned in 2006 but was stalled due to several reasons including land acquisition.
This will be India’s first eight-lane fully access-controlled urban expressway with a six-lane service road.
UER 2
UER 2, called the third ring road of the national capital, starts from NH-1 near the village Bankoli and terminates close to the junction of sector 24 in Dwarka.
Last year, when Gadkari inspected the project, he said that the first three packages of the NH-344M would serve as an additional western ring road in Delhi, offering an alternative route for traffic from west or south Delhi, IGI airport, and Gurugram, heading towards NH-44, Chandigarh, Punjab, as well as Jammu and Kashmir.
It also connects to the proposed India International Convention & Expo Centre (IICC) in Dwarka and will improve traffic flow in Delhi.
The construction of the project started in November 2021 with a scheduled completion date of October 2023. Now, it is expected to be ready by June.
